PLEA and propositions for amendments to the ISM code
The page of the ISM Code N°48

PROPOSITIONS OF MODIFICATIONS

Rationale
The ISM code is now well known in the maritime world and is considered one of the pillars of safety at sea, but its updating remains timid.
It was born in 1993 and we are now at a 2013 version that would need a revision after 7 years of existence!
Since its inception, few has changed, although some areas of the code are still somewhere not very clear. Traditionally, all IMO texts can be amended periodically at the request of a member after a working group study and a vote in the Maritime Safety Committee and then, at the end of the loop, an adoption by the Assembly. This process takes some time, which is normal because any change impact the entire shipping industry. Proposals for amendments are therefore subject to a member who is therefore responsible for preparing a text in due course for a session of the corresponding working group (HTWsub-committee here) with a well-supported argument.
Basically, a revision of the ISM code could be studied this year and a new text adopted for 2025, it would only be 30 years after his birth. It seems quite difficult but still possible.
Communicated to AFCAN INFORMATIONS readers the following proposal is intended to solicit your own proposals and the author of this article undertakes to synthesize them and pass them on to our Administration via AFCAN. So, please send your opinion and your proposals to bertrand.apperry@orange.fr

What modifications?
The amendments proposed (below in red, with the current text in black or blue) are the result of a reflection of Ship's Masters applying or having applied for a long time the ISM code on their ships or in their companies.
